Overview
With livestock partners throughout Japan, we focus on various concepts and values of fattening cattle, such as "resource recycling-oriented fattening," "animal welfare," "re-fattening of waste cattle (mother cows and dairy cattle bulls)," and "domestic feed, grass, and pasture. We are developing food ingredients, processed and manufactured products, and planning and operating various types of restaurants that make use of them.

Among the company's livestock farmer partners, who are not preoccupied with rank myths but emphasize resource recycling and animal welfare, we would like to introduce "Hiramatsu Chikusan" in Kanoya City, Kagoshima. In addition to the grass they grow themselves, they make their own original feed, keep mothers and calves together, and have established a fattening method that further increases the value of aged cattle.

ICJ got fascinated with the passion of Mr. Karasawa, who started his own farm 11 years ago in order to overcome the clutches and confusion that he found after graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture and working for an agricultural corporation. His craft beer made from homemade koji and wheat, spring water from the historic Kashima Jingu Shrine, and gelato made from Japanese native soybeans that are not grown anywhere else are truly delicious!

While there are few startups involved in the refrigerated/frozen area, it is an area that has a very large social impact. The ability to extend the freshness maintenance period makes it possible to adjust shipments, and it can also be applied to time-consuming sea route exports.
This will open up opportunities for Japanese agricultural products to be exported overseas.

While many plant factories have failed, the approach of developing a small-scale operation in an urban center is interesting. It is an interesting business model that, if economically viable in terms of cost and volume, is likely to be accepted by consumers. In addition, the manager has a wealth of knowledge about vegetables and objectively analyzes the history and business model of plant factories.

Among them, I am convinced by the background that made paddy fields the first choice. The unique positioning of Bacillus natto, which is more advanced in research than other countries, is interesting, and because of its high protein content ratio, it has great potential as a functional material if mass production and cost reduction are realized. In addition, the fact that food residues can be upcycled and that the product is in powder form and easily transportable also makes it possible to create a highly complete business model.

The approach of becoming a first-mover or acquiring the entire value chain is effective, but since there are still no players in this area in Japan, a solid partnership with a major player in the market is expected to lead to a big business in the future. However, since there are no players in this field in Japan yet, we can expect that a solid strategy and a proven track record in the U.S. and European markets will lead to significant future business.

This is an interesting startup with technology to reduce chemical fertilizer use and increase yields, and with diverse value-providing outlets: regenerative agriculture, circular economy, and Climate Tech. Fertilizer is a commodity industry, so we feel that this is a model that can be scaled if cost reductions can be realized through mass production, and we see tremendous potential in this model.
